John Davidson Honored

Former broadcaster John Davidson is being honored! He will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Congrats JD!

John Davidson was a former goalie for the Rangers and for the St. Louis Blues – where he currently works as president – and formed one of my favorite broadcasting tandems along with Sam Rosen on the MSG Network for the New York Rangers. J.D. is a former player that was outstanding at explaining the game of hockey without coming across as condescending to the old or new fan. Just because one played a sport doesn’t mean they are going to be a good broadcaster.

I had a friend tell me once that he knew more "‘cause he played." Well as that great prophet Derrick Coleman once said, "Whoopdee damn do!" Articulating the game is a different story! J.D. was able to do just that.

First-year eligible players for the Hockey Hall of Fame were also announced today. Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Brian Leetch, Alexander Mogilny and Luc Robitaille are all up for induction.

Finally, Dave Molinari was announced as the winner of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for print journalism. Molinari is the beat reporter for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

By the way, I know the Wings are up 2-0 and some in Pittsburgh want to believe that there team has a shot of coming back, but I say Wings in 5. I'm disappointed that Chicago did not make more of a showing in the conference finals against Detroit, but experience was a big factor for the Red Wings. Meanwhile, Cam Ward and Carolina just wasn't ready for the onslaught of the Penguins and their incredible offense.
